Rules
1. Match structure
- Scoring: each set is won at 11 points. At 10-10, play continues until one player leads by 2 points (e.g. 12-10).
- Sets: the number of sets needed to win a match is decided beforehand. Tournament finals and semifinals are usually best of three. Swiss and POVO CUP matches are best of 5. All other matches are a single set. Variations are always possible.
- Service change: service passes to the opponent every 2 points. At deuce, service changes after every point.
2. Service and the Coach Rule
- Soft toss: the strict 16 cm vertical toss required by the federation is not needed; the ball just has to stay visible to the opponent and be tossed up at least a little.
- Coach Rule: if the serve misses the opponent’s court (for example the ball flies out), the server may serve again. The court is the whole part of the table that is not considered out during a rally. E.g. the side edges are not part of the court.
3. The “Povo Rule”
- Saving bonus: you cannot lose a set (or the whole match) by making a direct service fault.
- If the opponent has a set point or match point and the server commits a service fault, the point is not awarded and the serve is replayed.
- Limit: this save can be used only once per set. If the bonus has already been used and the server faults again on a deciding point, the point and the set go to the opponent.
4. Doubles
- Free court (no fault): in doubles the server must serve diagonally, from their right corner to the opponent’s left. However, the serve is replayed if, after bouncing on their own side, the ball lands in the wrong half of the opponent’s court.
- Alternating shots: to keep the tactical side of doubles, partners must still strictly alternate hitting the ball.
5. Let
- Net: if a serve is otherwise legal but touches the net before landing in the opponent’s court, it is replayed, with no limit.
6. Etiquette
- Respect for the opponent: moderate trash talking is allowed, as long as it doesn’t lead to fights. It is accepted as banter between players.
